Klagenfurt’s galleries and art museums

In Klagenfurt’s wide variety of art museums and galleries, you will find not only permanent exhibitions of famous names from the art world of the Alps-Adriatic region, but also changing shows of major international artists from all over the world.

When it comes to art history, the must-see is the Carinthian Museum of Modern Art (MMKK) in the city centre at the Burghof, which is also well worth seeing in itself. Treat yourself to one of the legendary guided tours through this venerable building.

In the Stadtgalerie and the Alpen-Adria-Galerie, both the highlights and the media change in rapid succession. Sometimes major international names are showcased, and are then followed by young names in the European context. The galleries show not just paintings, but also sculptures and photographs, through to fashion, design or new media. In particular the livingstudio, which is situated inside the Stadtgalerie but can be visited separately with free entrance, is a platform for young artists that is well worth seeing.

The large number of private galleries and art spaces complete the rounded picture of the art scene in Klagenfurt, connecting the cultural region with the international markets throughout the world.

Galerie 3 in the heart of the city is a leader in smoothing the path to the international market for up-and-coming local artists, and showing and offering major international names in Klagenfurt.

The Kunstverein Kärnten art association is housed in the Goethepark, in the Künstlerhaus, which is also well worth seeing itself. Contemporary art and its significance are put up for discussion in the diverse exhibitions. The art association regards itself as a backlash against the commercialisation of art in many areas, and especially as a forum for meeting and discourse.

At the Kunsthaus:Kollitsch you can see a broad cross-section of the varied media, methods and topics of modern art. Visitors to this listed building are impressed by works of internationally eminent artists, selected with care and presented in the spirit of the times.
