Our guide to the best food in Klagenfurt on Sundays

Which means that you can eat out really well in the Lindwurm city – but this contribution aims to answer a question that is frequently asked: Where can you go to eat well on Sunday in particular? Which restaurants are open on Sunday, where can you find the best breakfast at the weekend and what insider tips has Klagenfurt to offer?

Klagenfurt has made a name for itself as one of the gourmet capitals in the Alps-Adriatic region. It is not difficult to find a good restaurant, fine inn or cosy café. And it is also teeming with culinary hotspots, festivals and weekly markets.

We have compiled the best places to eat for you, where you can be really spoiled on a Sunday. Have fun trying them!

Austrian specialities at the Landhaushof

We start with good, homestyle cooking, which has really had its cobwebs dusted off with modern charm at the Landhaushof. The restaurant in the Klagenfurt Landhaus is the perfect place to drum up the family for Sunday lunch together.

The classic restaurant cuisine is lovingly supplemented by changing vegetarian options, and nowhere do they taste better than in the cosy guest garden in the heart of the almost 500-year-old seat of the Carinthian state parliament.

Austrian tradition and hospitality are blended with the Alps-Adriatic cuisine that is typical for Klagenfurt.

Your Sunday outing to the Schweizerhaus on the Kreuzbergl

If you prefer to crown (or begin) your Sunday outing with a meal not far from Klagenfurt, but nonetheless want to enjoy the feeling of wiping off the city dust a bit, the Schweizerhaus on the Kreuzbergl will be close to your heart.

Amidst the green of the forest and with one of the nicest views across Klagenfurt from the terrace, if you make a booking here on a Sunday, you have definitely done everything right.

From here you can visit the nearby Kreuzbergl church or the observatory, or set off for a walk to the three Kreuzbergl ponds.

The menu scores with regional fish and game, and the legendary pasta variations.

Cool and delicious in the Hafenstadt

If you are looking to go out for breakfast on a Sunday, then the bistro in the trendy Hafenstadt Urban Area is one of your top ports of call. The “Dock01” never has a day off, so it is open and well-attended at the weekend too.

Selected by the readers of the magazine Falstaff as the most popular breakfast eatery in Carinthia, there is always a lot going on here on Sunday. So if you fancy one of the creative breakfasts with musical names such as “Frank Sinatra”, “Ingmar Bergman” or “Romy and Alain”, then you should book in good time.

And if you want to do something good for body and soul before you indulge on Sunday, then you should ask me about the yoga and shared breakfast events that take place roughly monthly in the Hafenstadt. Namaste!

Pizza, pasta and gelato at the Villa Lido

Probably almost everyone in Klagenfurt has eaten at least once at the Villa Lido, right on the shore of Lake Wörthersee in the east bay. Here the locals mix with the holiday guests and trippers, and the best places are usually fiercely contested.

But no matter whether you pop in for a pizza and a cool drink while you look out at the water, enjoy coffee and ice cream in view of the playground, or enjoy a lunchtime snack, the quality is right and the place is always filled with life and a holiday buzz.

Fine dining at the Restaurant Maria Loretto

At the other end of the east bay is the Maria Loretto peninsula. In summer, if you are there early, you can eat a simple, classic breakfast almost alone at the Strandbad lakeside lido, and then take another brief dip in the unspoiled morning water of the lake before the bathing guests arrive.

A few steps further away, the Restaurant Maria Loretto is located right on the lake and is also open on Sundays all year round.

When you are already virtually sitting by the sea, you should also sample the variety of fish dishes here. From the local trout to sole and scallops, everything is prepared while it is still wonderfully fresh!

Inside, the restaurant is smart and very lovingly furnished, but naturally when the weather is warm, the best places on the terrace with a view of the lake are much sought-after. So here too it is best to book early enough!

Sunday brunch at the Hotel Sandwirth

The Hotel Sandwirth is widely renowned for its Sunday breakfast and brunch. Who as a local does not love a classic hotel breakfast buffet?

But the Sunday brunch at the Sandwirth can do much, much more. In addition to the generous daily breakfast buffet which focuses on regional products and homemade treats, on Sundays a starter and dessert buffet awaits, with the selected main course served at the table.

The only downside: in summer the Sunday brunch takes a break. However, this year as part of the Klagenfurt Days of Alps-Adriatic Cuisine with its matching focus the season will start on 27 September, and the week after the season will continue with the wine brunch: the winemakers from the Kamptal valley who produce the Sandwirth’s house wines will come along in person to present their treasures.

Breakfast and brunch lovers should sample this highlight without fail!

Insider tip: if you only eat breakfast during the week, your best plan is to order the breakfast etagere for two!
